Putin's vision of 'peace' defies UN Charter and common sense - Sullivan

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's vision of peace, which involves the occupation of Ukrainian regions and the country's vulnerability to future aggression, defies the UN charter, basic morality and basic common sense.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said this on the second day of the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

In particular, he recalled the "proposals" voiced by Putin before the Peace Summit, according to which Ukraine should surrender not only the occupied territory to Russia, but also leave additional sovereign territory before Russia will negotiate, and Ukraine must also disarm and be vulnerable to future aggression.

"No responsible nation can say 'That is the reasonable basis for peace.' It defies the UN Charter, it defies basic morality, it defies basic common sense. By contrast, the vision of peace that was put forward here today from so many different countries, rooted in principles all of us signed up to, rooted in principles all of us would like to live in a world that is ruled by those principles, because they make us all safe," Sullivan said.

He said that the vision of the Peace Summit is right and the event is a critical milestone on the path toward a just peace.

"The United States of America will proudly walk with Ukraine along that path until Ukraine prevails and peace prevails," Sullivan said.

The first Summit on Peace in Ukraine started on June 15 in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock. The topics being discussed at the summit include nuclear security, food security and the humanitarian dimension – the exchange of prisoners and the return of abducted Ukrainian children. The final documents of the summit will be sent to Russia
