IAEA looking into incident with Russian missile flying over nuclear plant in Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency is looking into the incident involving a Russian missile spotted flying over the site of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant.

That's according to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“The IAEA is looking into this matter, which, if confirmed, would be extremely serious. Had such a missile gone astray, it could have had a severe impact on the physical integrity of the NPP potentially leading to a nuclear accident,” Grossi said in a statement.

As reported earlier, on the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster which shocked the world in 1986 Russian missiles flew directly over the power units of three Ukrainian NPPs – Zaporizhia, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine.

Ukraine has repeatedly stressed that Russia is creating major risks to regional and global nuclear safety by conducting military operations in the immediate proximity to nuclear energy facilities and seizing NPPs.
