Senator Graham expects tougher sanctions on Russia ahead of G7 Summit

The bill, co-authored by Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, proposes 500% tariffs on imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, or uranium. The aim is to pressure countries like China and India to stop financing Russia’s war machine through energy purchases.

The legislation already has the support of at least 82 senators.

“By the G-7 summit, we hope to have sanctions put in place — in coordination with Europe — to deliver an unequivocal message to China,” the senators said in a joint statement following meetings with French officials in Paris.

The lawmakers also noted that French President Emmanuel Macron supports lowering the price cap on Russian oil, which could deal a financial blow to Russia.

The upcoming G7 Summit is expected to feature discussions on new sanctions against Russia.
