UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid a sharp drop in temperatures.

According to Ukrinform, citing the UK government, the conversation took place on Tuesday.

“The leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, including the barbaric Russian attacks on the country overnight. Putin’s fierce attacks on critical national infrastructure, including energy systems, were particularly depraved as temperatures dropped below -20C,” the Prime Minister said.

Starmer and Trump also discussed the strategic military base on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean, which is used by both countries. They acknowledged the “strategic importance” of the facility and agreed to continue working closely to guarantee the future operation of the base.

As a reminder, the UK has agreed to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, which includes Diego Garcia Island, to Mauritius, on the condition that control over the base is retained. Trump sharply criticized this decision, calling it a sign of “complete weakness” and “an act of great foolishness.”

As previously reported by Ukrinform, Trump claimed that Putin had kept his word by promising not to shell Ukrainian cities for a week during the severe frosts.
