EU going to extend sanctions against Iran over arms sales to Russia

The EU countries intend to extend sanctions against Iran for the development and construction of ballistic missiles, which will expire in October 2023.

This is reported by Ukrinform citing Reuters.

The sources cited three reasons for keeping the sanctions: Russia's use of Iranian drones against Ukraine; the possibility Iran might transfer ballistic missiles to Russia; and depriving Iran of the nuclear deal's benefits.

"The Iranians have been told quite clearly (of plans to keep the sanctions) and now the question is what, if any, retaliatory steps the Iranians might take and (how) to anticipate that," said a Western diplomat on condition of anonymity.

As reported, Iran is using a direct route to supply weapons to Russia that Western countries can do nothing about. An increasing number of possible arms shipments are crossing the Caspian Sea from Tehran to Moscow.

Experts believe that this route is used to transport drones, bullets and mortar shells that Russia has purchased for the war in Ukraine.
