Only NATO members themselves can take part in decision-making regarding the accession of new countries to the Alliance.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated this in response to a question about possible restrictions that could be imposed on Ukraine within the peace proposal put forward by the United States.

“The key there is to ensure that conversations about NATO membership rest with NATO itself and in particular Canada has long supported the open accession process for NATO membership, and we continue to support Ukraine’s path towards that,” Anand said.

She stressed that “nobody wants peace more than Ukrainian people.” “We need to do whatever possible to support the peace efforts, to support a potential ceasefire, and then to be there for Ukraine in the reconstruction, and the replenishment of infrastructure, and support for the Ukrainian people,” the Canadian foreign minister noted.
