A 40-year-old Ukrainian citizen was murdered in Berlin on February 9. The police detained a 46-year-old man, also a citizen of Ukraine, as a suspect in the crime.

That is according to a joint statement by the police and the Berlin prosecutor's office, as well as information from the Embassy of Ukraine in Germany, Ukrinform reports.

"The Berlin police have confirmed the death of a Ukrainian citizen on February 9, 2026 in Berlin. The possibility of murder is being investigated. The detained suspect is also a citizen of Ukraine. The case is under the control of the embassy," the Embassy of Ukraine said in a comment on its Facebook page.

According to an official statement by law enforcement officers, at about 03:30, the police were called to the green zone on Altengofer Strasse. The body of a woman with severe injuries to the upper body was found at the scene. During the initial investigation, the police detained a 46-year-old suspect near the crime scene.

Details of the motives and course of events are not yet disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the deceased was found on a bench near a playground. The crime scene was covered in blood, and a thermos, an electronic cigarette, a backpack and a scarf were lying nearby in the snow. According to the report, the victim and the suspect may have known each other. There is currently no official confirmation of this information from law enforcement agencies.
