Security guarantees for peace in Ukraine must have U.S. support - Starmer

This was stated by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at a press conference after the summit of European leaders in London on Ukraine, Ukrinform reports with reference to The Telegraph.

Starmer noted that the UK is ready to support the initiative of the "coalition of the willing" to ensure the implementation of any peace agreement in Ukraine "with boots on the ground and planes in the air”, and that Europe must “do the heavy lifting”, but this requires the support from the United States.

"But to support peace on our continent. And to succeed, this effort must have strong US backing," Starmer said. “We’re working with the US on this point, after my meeting with President Trump last week. And let me be clear – we agree with the President on the urgent need for a durable peace. Now we need to deliver, together.”

He added that he had spoken to President Trump last night, without going into details, noting that he wouldn’t be taking this step if he didn’t think it would be a positive outcome in terms of ensuring that both Ukraine, Europe, the UK, and the U.S. move toward lasting peace.

Starmer was asked if he could rule out conflict between the UK and Russia, to which he replied that the whole point of the guarantee that will be put in place for Ukraine is to guarantee peace and avoid further conflict.

The prime minister stressed that he doesn’t want conflict in Ukraine, in Europe, and certainly in the UK. “I want stability in the United Kingdom,” Starmer stressed.

The way to ensure stability, the prime minister believers, is to ensure that partners can protect the peace  agreement in Ukraine because history proves that, if there is a conflict in Europe, it will reach UK shores.

Starmer added that European leaders will soon meet again when the time comes to act to continue work on a common plan.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, at a press conference, Keir Starmer confirmed plans to assemble a “coalition of the willing” to ensure the implementation of any peace agreement, in which the United Kingdom should play a leading role. He also announced that in addition to the GBP 2.2 billion loan announced yesterday, Britain is allocating GBP 1.6 billion for air defense missiles for Ukraine.
