Rubio: U.S. still wants to meet with Russia despite imposing sanctions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States still wants to meet with Russia, despite the Trump administration imposing sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies.

This was reported by CNN, according to Ukrinform.

“We’d still like to meet with the Russians … I had a good call with foreign minister Lavrov and we’ll follow up on that. We’re always going to be interested in engaging if there’s an opportunity to achieve peace,” Rubio noted.

Rubio stated that U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose sanctions against Russia was his long-standing promise.

“I think the president has said repeatedly for many months now that at some point he will have to do something if we don’t make progress on the peace deal. Today was the day he decided to do something,” Rubio said.

As reported by Ukrinform, on Wednesday, President Donald Trump imposed sanctions against Russia's two largest oil companies, telling reporters in the Oval Office that he “felt it was time” for sanctions and noting that he had “waited a long time” to impose them.

Trump also said on Wednesday that he had canceled a planned meeting with Putin because, in his opinion, “It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get.”
