Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the United Kingdom for detaining a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker off its coast.

According to Ukrinform, the head of state announced this in an evening address

“Today, we also have a particular reason to thank Britain: the British have detained a Russian oil tanker off their coast, and this is the first such move by the British,” the President noted.

According to him, detaining ships from Russia’s shadow fleet has become a good tradition in European waters this year. “Oil must be stopped so that Russia’s war comes to a halt. Thank you, Britain,” Zelensky emphasized.

In addition, he noted that starting next week, they will discuss with European partners ensuring that “legislative changes finally allow for the longer-term detention of tankers that are making money for Putin’s war—exclusively for him—and the confiscation of that oil.”

The president stressed that the coming week will be crucial and that Ukraine is counting on results.

“First and foremost, of course, air defense for Ukraine, political agreements that will strengthen our defense here in Ukraine, the opening of a cluster—a cluster for Ukraine and Moldova—and steps toward a lasting peace: we will discuss some ideas with our partners that are not yet public,” Zelensky announced.

In addition, he emphasized that this summer everyone must be as effective and active as possible, and must not waste a single day or a single opportunity. “We are counting on results starting next week and are working, working toward that,” the head of state concluded.

As reported by Ukrinform, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that on Sunday morning, the British Armed Forces intercepted the oil tanker Smyrtos, part of Russia’s shadow fleet, while it was attempting to pass through the English Channel.
