Talks with Russia may resume after Ukraine Army’s counteroffensives in late Aug – Arakhamia

Ukraine may resume talks with Russia from a strengthened position at the end of August after counteroffensives are conducted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in certain areas.

The relevant statement was made by David Arakhamia, the Head of the Ukrainian delegation and the Leader of the Servant of the People Faction, in a commentary to Voice of America, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Late August [it is when the negotiation process may resume – Ed.]. We do not want to share our plans with Russians, as they can see them in the open sources, but I think we will conduct a counteroffensive in certain areas,” Arakhamia told.

In his words, a minimum agreement with Russia can be considered if the Ukrainian Army pushes Russian troops away from the territory of Ukraine or Russian troops get withdrawn on their own to the positions before February 24.

“We could consider some political treaty like the one proposed in Istanbul. For example, we would not touch on the Crimean issue for several years. We would do it not militarily but diplomatically,” Arakhamia noted.

A reminder that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia had lasted since late February 2022. In May 2022, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak announced that Ukraine had suspended talks with the Russian Federation. On June 16, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that negotiations with Russia were not underway exclusively because of Russia’s position.
