According to Ukrinform, this was announced by Andrii Danik, head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, as reported by the State Emergency Service on Facebook.
“Today, the family of rescue workers is mourning yet another tragic loss. In the Sumy region, our colleagues from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine’s “Sumy” Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Center were killed during a humanitarian demining operation—Civil Protection Service Major and Head of the Mechanized Demining Group Oleksandr Kovalchuk, and Civil Protection Service Master Sergeant and Demining Operator Denys Sydorych,” Danik said.
According to him, a Russian munition detonated while the explosive ordnance disposal team was working in the Shostka district. One deminer died at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital in critical condition but could not be saved.
Oleksandr was 32 years old. He had dedicated more than 15 of those years to serving in the State Emergency Service. His wife, 4-year-old son, and parents were waiting for him at home.
