Russian leader Vladimir Putin's claim that the invasion of Ukraine is part of the country's "de-Nazification" is a grotesque lie.

That’s according to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who addressed the issue on Twitter.

“Putin's claim that his invasion of Ukraine is 'de-Nazification' is a grotesque lie. Instead we're seeing the bombardment of innocent people,” Johnson wrote.

The head of the British government also mentioned the death of a 96-year-old former prisoner of the Nazi concentration camps, Boris Romanchenko of Kharkiv.

"An appalling tragedy. Boris survived four concentration camps & dedicated his life to ensuring the horrors of Nazism wouldn't be repeated," Johnson added.

Boris Romanchenko, a 96-year-old Nazi concentration camp prisoner who survived Buchenwald, was killed in a Russian missile strike in Kharkiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24 declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops have been shelling and destroying infrastructure, conducting massive air and artillery raids on residential areas of Ukrainian cities and towns, killing civilians, committing crimes against humanity.

Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced.
