As of mid-September, 81 companies have joined an experimental project involving the private sector in Ukraine’s air defense  network.

Ukrinform reports this, citing the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defense has granted these companies authorized status to carry out air defense measures.

A total of 92 companies of various ownership types from different sectors and regions of Ukraine have applied to join the private air defense initiative. They include operators and enterprises of critical infrastructure, in addition to private-sector companies.

The experimental project to involve the private sector in carrying out air defense measures was launched at the initiative of the Ministry of Defense in late 2025.

The project is intended to strengthen the protection of employees, production facilities, and other assets of companies that are systematically targeted by Russian unmanned systems.

Private air defense is part of Ukraine’s multilayered airspace protection system. Private air defense groups do not operate independently but are part of the overall system under the command of the Air Command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, as of early August, private air defense groups, which had already been joined by more than 50 companies at the time, had shot down more than 50 aerial targets.
