U.S. House passes Lindsey Graham sanctions bill targeting Russia

As reported by an Ukrinform correspondent, 262 members of Congress voted in favor of the bill, while 159 voted against it.

The legislation provides for sanctions against Russian officials, banks and the “shadow fleet” of tankers used to transport Russian energy resources.

The bill also authorizes the U.S. President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil and natural gas.

At the same time, the tariffs would not apply to countries that purchase less than 15% of all Russian gas exports and have taken significant steps to reduce their imports.

The U.S. Senate passed the bill last month by a vote of 86-11.

Supporters of the legislation say the tariff provisions would deter China, India and other major buyers from purchasing Russian energy resources. Critics fear that the President could use these powers to pressure U.S. allies, including the EU countries, while the tariffs could drive up prices for American consumers.

As reported by Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky, following another series of strikes on civilian targets in various regions of Ukraine, called on partners to increase pressure on Russia by supporting the Lindsey Graham bill and strengthening European sanctions.
